River Crossing Playback Theatre performs at organizations, schools, congregations and community venues, bringing audience interaction and stories into a new light and a new dialogue that can cross challenging divisions.

The strength of River Crossing Playback Theatre is our success in honoring difficult stories that often bridge diverse views in community. We specialize in embodying an audience’s visceral experiences that go beyond words and then bringing these into the realm of stories.

In 2007-2008, we launched out of the Healing York Initiative to address racial wounds in York, PA that were laid bare at that time.

In 2015, we hosted the We Belong series of performances in conjunction with Poetic Voices to continue addressing marginalization and healing in York County, made possible by the PA Council of the Arts.

We continue to perform for such gatherings and organizations as Advoz: Mediation & Restorative Practices, Atlantic Coast Mennonite conference, Brethren Village, Elizabethtown College, Gould Farm Therapeutic Community, Lancaster General Health Family Physician Residents, Laurelville Retreat Center, Masonic Village, Millersville University School of Social Work, Quincy Village, Transformational Authors Breakthrough, Unitarian Universalist congregations, US Playback Theatre Gathering (2024), YWCA of York, and many more.

Imagine your organization or your community telling their own heartfelt stories within an hour of gathering – and listening intently to each other.  And one by one, those stories come to life on stage!

That’s Playback Theatre, an interactive form that creates a beautiful community dialogue developed in 1975 in New York’s Hudson Valley. If you’re in Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic Region, it could now be your community, your group, your company, your place of worship.
